Lincoln Center to Provide Workshops and Health Screenings at SoBRO

February 25, 2008

On February 27, 2008, the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (SoBRO) will host an event in cooperation with Lincoln Medical Center as part of the New York City Health Literacy Campaign. Throughout the day on Wednesday, health professionals from Lincoln Medical Center will lead workshops on the health concerns that most impact he Bronx community followed by free screenings for high blood pressure and diabetes, two of the most common chronic health diseases in our community.

SoBRO is a partner in the New York City Health Literacy Campaign, a collaboration between the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), Urban Health Plan Inc., the Mayor’s Office, and the Adult Education System. This event is designed to advance the campaign’s agenda of connecting adult learners to city services by providing knowledge and skills in the classroom and giving them the opportunity to put their learning into practice.

Since 2006, SoBRO has been incorporating health literacy into its English as a Second Language (ESL) and Adult Basic Education classes. This upcoming event follows the success of another day of health education and screenings organized by SoBRO in October 2007. There, more than 70 students from SoBRO’s ESL Program received free health screenings at Lincoln Hospital. The event also gave them the chance to practice vocabulary specially catered to health care settings, which they practiced in preparation for their screenings.
