SoBRO is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in the South Bronx by generating effective economic, housing, educational and career development programs for youth and adults
The young adults pictured above were selected to be members in the 2018 SoBro YouthBuild Construction Program cohort after completing a vigorous assessment of their academic and analytical skills, skills critical to fulfilling the demanding responsibilities of working at a real construction site. SoBro prepares every YouthBuild participant to successfully complete the 30-hour OSHA Safety requirement as well as earn the sought after National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) certification further increases the possibilities for employment. While the participants learn to traditional construction duties such as how to frame a site and install plumbing fixtures, this group will be learning cord drilling, which is an entirely separate discipline and can become a specialty.
“These four are just a few of the many, very eager and excited young women and men who are beginning a path to work and independence for themselves and their families,” said Monica Rene, SoBro Bronx YouthBuild Site Manager. “One particularly bright and ambition youth in the cohort, Ermes Alcantara, knows that learning the construction trade is the most empowering option for him right now. He is hoping to be selected to join the crew as a full-time hire at the end of the internship.”
YouthBuild is a recognized and respected pre-apprenticeship program that helps at-risk youth from ages 16-24 to obtain their high school equivalency and go on to develop skills and knowledge to obtain industry-recognized job credentials, apprenticeships, and employment. Young adults come here to learn skills that will help them get and retain jobs in a competitive field. They are also gaining firsthand experience in teamwork and site safety, while fulfilling a desire to do something constructive and meaningful with their lives.
When completed, this construction project will bring New York City 41 more affordable housing units. We’re proud to be doing all that we can to ensure a balance in the growth in these neighborhoods that our YouthBuild participants and their families have called home for generations and where they’ve have built strong relationships and created fond memories.
